Winter storm map shows how much snow expected for each state

National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists across the nation have issued winter weather alerts on Tuesday, with many states expecting several inches of snow or more over the next 24 hours.

The alerts stretch from the Northern Plains states across the Upper Great Lakes and Midwest and into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. They are a result of different storm systems, although impacts will be similar across the wide-reaching areas: heavy snowfall and hazardous travel. In some cases, states are experiencing above-average snowfall for this time of year.

Winter storm warnings and weather advisories are in place for the following states: Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Northern Plains

Meteorologists warned of up to 18 inches of snow in Montana’s Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains through Wednesday evening.

Up to 2 feet of snow is expected to hit Wyoming’s Tetons. Other parts of the state also could see more than a foot, with meteorologists warning of “very difficult” travel. Winter weather advisories are in place for northern, western and southern Wyoming, with up to 2 feet of snow possible for high-elevation areas, and lesser amounts likely for lower-elevation sites.

Winter storm warnings and weather advisories have been issued across northeast North Dakota, with up to 7 inches of snow possible.

Great Lakes

The same storm is poised to affect Minnesota, with NWS meteorologists issuing winter storm warnings and watches, along with winter weather advisories across most of the state. Experts predict six inches of snow across the state.

“A strong clipper system is bringing a variety of winter impacts to much of Minnesota and Wisconsin through early tomorrow morning,” NWS Twin Cities said in its winter storm warning. “Heavy snowfall with rates exceeding 1 inch per hour will be possible generally along and north of I-94.”

Nearly the entire state of Wisconsin is under winter storm warnings or winter weather advisories, with up to 7 inches of snow expected to fall before 6 a.m. Wednesday local time.

A winter weather advisory has been issued across Central Michigan, with meteorologists warning of up to 6 inches of snow from Port Huron on the state’s eastern coast to Ludington on its Lake Michigan side.

Mid-Atlantic

Winter weather advisories are in place in limited parts of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland, with blizzard warnings also in place. NWS meteorologists warned of winter weather from Wednesday afternoon until Thursday morning, resulting in up to 3 inches of snow. This region has already seen ample snowfall, and NWS senior meteorologist Alec Butner told Newsweek it was a little early in the season for this amount of snow. 

Northeast

In the Northeast’s mid-Atlantic states, more snow is expected to hit Pennsylvania and New York, with similar warnings in place early Wednesday until Thursday afternoon. As much as 12 inches of snow could fall in New York’s Oneida County, with all of northern Pennsylvania facing from 2 to 6 inches.

Further north, in the New England states, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine all have winter weather advisories in place. Snow is expected in periods from Wednesday morning to Thursday afternoon, with widespread amounts of 6 inches likely.
