Why the Yankees are talking about having Devin Williams throw his best pitch less

The comment seemed born out of frustration, but there may have been a hint of truth in it.

After blowing an 8-4 lead on Saturday against the Rays at Steinbrenner Field, in a game the Yankees eventually lost, 10-8, in 10 innings, Devin Williams was asked, again, about why he was not getting as much swing-and-miss as he is used to on his signature changeup known as the “Airbender.”

“I don’t know,” Williams said. “I don’t know. Maybe using it too much, to be honest with you. We’ll work on that.”

Williams was understandably still agitated after another rough outing with his new team — albeit one in which he was burned by some soft contact and his walk to Ben Rortvedt on five pitches — so there was some thought he just threw that idea out in his exasperation.
