Four years after narrowly losing Oregon’s governor race, Republican Christine Drazan is headed back to the general election ballot, this time with a direct rematch against Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek after winning the 2026 Republican gubernatorial primary.

Drazan secured roughly 44.5% of the Republican primary vote, defeating a crowded GOP field and emerging once again as the party’s standard-bearer in a race Republicans believe could become one of the nation’s most competitive gubernatorial contests.

The victory sets up a high-stakes showdown between two candidates who already tested Oregon’s political divide in 2022, when Kotek defeated Drazan by about 3.5 percentage points in the closest Oregon governor’s race in years.

A Familiar Matchup Returns

Kotek, who won the Democratic primary decisively with about 84% of the vote, enters the general election as the incumbent governor facing renewed scrutiny over Oregon’s economic conditions, housing challenges and public safety concerns.

Drazan has centered her campaign on frustration over the state’s business climate, inflation pressures and conditions in Portland, arguing Democratic leadership has failed to address affordability and economic uncertainty.

“We have an opportunity to restore confidence in Oregon,” Drazan told supporters after her primary win, according to local reports. “Oregonians are ready for change.”

Who Is Christine Drazan?

Drazan, 53, was born in Klamath Falls and has spent her life in Oregon. She has frequently tied her political message to her upbringing in southern Oregon, where the timber industry’s decline shaped many rural communities economically during the 1980s.

Drazan worked as a legislative staffer and lobbyist. She was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 2018 and quickly rose through Republican leadership ranks, serving as House Minority Leader from 2019 to 2021 and again in 2025.

In late 2025, she was appointed to represent Oregon’s 26th Senate District before launching her second bid for governor.

Economic Issues Expected to Dominate Race

Drazan’s campaign is expected to heavily focus on taxes, business regulation and Oregon’s economic direction.

She has argued that Democratic policies have made Oregon less competitive for businesses and more difficult for working families. Supporters at her election-night event voiced concerns about rising costs, homelessness and the broader economic climate across the state.

Her stance on corporate taxation is likely to face scrutiny during the general election. Critics have questioned whether her current business-focused messaging represents a shift from earlier positions during her legislative career.

Drazan’s campaign has largely framed the issue around economic growth and job creation rather than tax cuts alone.

Why the Race Matters Nationally

The 2022 election proved Republicans can compete statewide in Oregon under the right political conditions. With no prominent independent candidate in the 2026 race, analysts expect a more direct battle between Democratic and Republican voters.

For Kotek, the challenge will be defending her record while maintaining support in the Portland metro area and among suburban voters who helped Democrats hold the governor’s office four years ago.

For Drazan, the path to victory likely depends on expanding Republican turnout in rural Oregon while cutting into Democratic margins in suburban communities frustrated by economic concerns.
