Traffic tweaks planned along east side of Lady Bird Lake next month

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new traffic pattern is planned along South Pleasant Valley Road early next month as construction continues on a new bridge crossing Lady Bird Lake.

Northbound travel lanes on South Pleasant Valley Road will narrow between Willow Street and the pedestrian sidewalk at Krieg Fields beginning Monday, Austin Capital Delivery Services announced. Those alterations are expected to run roughly two weeks.

During the traffic change, those recreating along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail will be relegated to the west side of South Pleasant Valley Road. For vehicular traffic, there will still be one lane in each direction.

“This closure will allow for reconstruction of the road that was deconstructed to install the new underpass,” the release noted. “All lanes and sidewalks will be reopened again upon completion of the project this fall.”

That aforementioned project is the Longhorn Dam Multimodal Improvements Project, a city effort to add a new wishbone-shaped bridge across Lady Bird Lake and linking Longhorn Shores, Holly Shores and the peninsula near Holly Shores.

Once the project wraps, the bridge will run just shy of a half-mile and offer a north and south connection point along the east side of Lady Bird Lake. Last April, Austin City Council approved a nearly $23 million contract to build the new bridge.
