‘The Rookie’ Season 8 Finale Sets New Streaming Record, Hits Demo High
ABC‘s The Rookie continues to defy its age, posting a year-to-year viewership bump with its Season 8 finale. The action-packed May 4 closer, which delivered an epic Chenford proposal years in the making followed by a shocking twist, delivered 9.25 million total viewers in Nielsen National Live+7 Day Big Data Plus Panel program ratings across linear and streaming.
That was up 4% from the Season 7 finale (8.93 million on May 13, 2025) and capped a three-week streak of viewership increases to log the series’ largest audience in more that three months (since January 26) after seven days of viewing on ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+ and digital platforms.
The Rookie Season 8 finale also earned a series streaming high over seven days and shot to a season high in the adults 18-49 demographic with a 2.1 rating (L+7).
The finale wrapped another strong season for The Rookie, whose growth post-pandemic when the patrol show was discovered and embraced by a wide audience continues. The 2025-26 season was the fourth in a row that The Rookie went up in both total viewers (9.04 million vs. 8.19 million) and adults 18-49 (2.05 rating vs. 1.59 rating) over the 2021-22 season, based on multiplatform viewing over seven days on ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+ and digital platforms.
In other Season 8 highlights, the opener (9.35 million total viewers on January 6) earned the show’s best multiplatform audience for a premiere in over six years (since September 29, 2019) and scored the best premiere episode ever for the series on streaming.
The Rookie, starring Nathan Fillion, also continues to be a hit with young viewers after becoming a viral hit on TikTok. It is the No. 1 broadcast drama among adults 18-34 and the No. 1 series overall among teens 12-17, based on Nielsen’s competitive multiplatform measurement over seven days.
The series will return for Season 9 in 2027, joined with the recently ordered The Rookie: North spinoff starring Jay Ellis.
