Religion Of Sports & Sonoro Team Up For Liga MX Docuseries

EXCLUSIVE: Religion of Sports and Sonoro are teaming up to produce a docuseries about Liga MX, Mexico’s premier professional soccer league.

The English-language series will follow three major Liga MX clubs—FC Juárez, Chivas, and Tigres—with each team having three dedicated episodes, for a total of nine. Already in production, the series will tackle three areas for each team: the management behind each soccer club, the players and coaches, and the fans.

As the U.S., Mexico, and Canada get ready to host the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 LA Olympics get closer, interest in soccer and its players surges. The Liga MX docuseries will be distributed digitally on platforms like YouTube, and a companion podcast featuring content not included in the doc will be available.

“The idea is to offer a 360 look at these teams, and more so than the teams themselves, the franchises that they’re building and who they are as businesses, but also as cultural moments and fandom,” Sonoro co-founder Camila Victoriano tells Deadline.

What Sonoro and Religion of Sports aim to do with the Liga MX docuseries is to give English-speaking Latinos a venue to follow the league.

Victoriano notes that the partnership with Religion of Sports taps into the Latino fandom of soccer “in a way that’s less than obvious,” adding, “It’s not just about the World Cup, it’s not just about Hispanic Heritage Month or Cinco de Mayo. It’s about all these other moments in the year where we are fans … and moments in the year, where you can reach Latinos in a meaningful way.”

The reason to focus on Liga MX rather than the U.S. soccer league, MLS, was to highlight that “great cultural moments can come from anywhere.”

The partnership with Religion of Sports, the production company co-founded by Tom Brady, Michael Strahan, and Gotham Chopra, came as they sought to reach young Latinos, an area of expertise for Sonoro.

“They saw an opportunity in the [Liga MX] franchise, and they were looking for a partner that could offer a level of expertise to the community they were trying to reach,” Victoriano explains.

Religion of Sports has produced sports and pop culture documentaries, including Prime Video’s Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues and Netflix’s Simone Biles Rising, as well as Hulu’s Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story.

Sonoro is a media company focused on the general market, targeting young, digitally-savvy, multicultural consumers. The group has over 300 creators in their network and has a podcast network with 100MM downloads each month.
