NWS survey team confirms long-track microburst hit Austin metro

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The National Weather Service conducted a damage survey Thursday morning for the Wednesday evening severe thunderstorm in the Austin metro area.

The survey concluded that a long-track microburst, associated with a supercell, moved through Central Texas, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and localized flooding.

The length of the damage was approximately 10 miles, with a path width ranging from 1 to 2.5 miles. Maximum sustained winds were estimated to be between 65 and 85 mph. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport reported a 77 mph gust.

Numerous power lines were damaged, resulting in tens of thousands of Austin residents without power. Additionally, the survey team found shingle damage and uprooted trees.
