Guillaume Canet, Romain Duris, Lyna Khoudri and Louis Peres have been announced for the cast of a feature film reboot of Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain’s iconic Fantômas franchise about a criminal mastermind.

The casting was announced by SND, the film production, distribution and sales arm of French commercial free-to-air broadcaster M6, which is spearheading the production and will introduce the film to international buyers at the AFM.

Principal photography will begin in Paris in January 2026, for a slated 2027 French release.

The feature will unfold in Paris in 1914, as series of violent crimes set the cops and the public on edge. Always one step ahead of the police, Fantomas is a master of deception and chaos.

In an era of violence and political tensions Lieutenant Juve finds himself hunting for a man with no motive, no agenda, no pattern or identity.

Frédéric Tellier (Goliath, Through the Fire) is directing the adaptation.

“Fantomas has always fascinated me – it’s a story that has captivated audiences for over a century,” he said.  “With this film, I wanted to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic character while staying true to its timeless essence. It’s an honor to join the ranks of filmmakers who have brought this legendary antihero to the screen, and to introduce Fantomas to a new generation of international viewers.”

Canet’s recent credits include in Netflix hit Ad Vitam, while Duris’ will be seen next in Phantom of the Opera.

Khoudri is one of France’s fastest rising stars with recent credits including The French Dispatch, Eagles of the Republic and The Three Musketeers, while Louis Peres’ upcoming credits include Les Misérables.

“We’re thrilled with the cast we’ve assembled,” said Tellier. “The chemistry between these actors will be electric, and I believe they will perfectly capture the essence of these iconic characters.

“Bringing together two pillars of French cinema, Romain Duris and Guillaume Canet, alongside international stars Lyna Khoudri and rising star Louis Peres, creates a dynamic will mirror the tension and evolution the story requires. I’m confident their performances will breathe new life into these beloved characters, making them resonate with both long-time fans and new audiences alike.”

The production also brings a high-profile crew including cinematographer Glynn Speeckaert, known for his close collaboration on Gianolli’s awards winners Marguerite and In the Beginning; production designer Florian Sanson (Annette, Holy Motors, Couture); costume designer Olivier Bériot (Valerian, Lupin, Lucy); editor Célia Lafitedupont (The Count of Monte Cristo) and artistic director Frédéric Cambon ( Lupin, Dracula and John Wick 4).

The original score is composed by prolific composer Guillaume Roussel whose recent credits include The Three Musketeers and Dog 51.

The crucial special effects for Fantomas masks will be created by Atelier 69, which worked onThe Animal Kingdom, Alpha and Titane.

Fantomas is produced by SND and Wy Productions

“Fantomas is a timeless character that has inspired numerous adaptations. Frédéric Tellier’s vision will bring a contemporary edge to this classic tale, promising to resonate with today’s global audiences,” said Wassi Beji, producer, Wy Productions.

“With more than 30 novels, 13 films, theater plays, and series, the character has transcended time and borders. Much like The Count of Monte Cristo, Fantomas is an adaptation of timeless classic destined to become the next global blockbuster.” Adds Ramy Nahas, Director of international distribution, SND.
