AUSTIN (KXAN) — A few northwest Austin neighborhoods were without power Wednesday afternoon as Central Texas faces continuous below-freezing temperatures.
According to Austin Energy, power was fully restored to customers affected shortly after 2:30 p.m. The agency said the “weather was a factor” and it is investigating “the exact cause.” AE said previously “an equipment issue with a transformer” was causing the outages.
The outages happened in portions of Austin between U.S. Highway 183, State Highway 45 and MoPac Expressway. The outages initially impacted roughly 7,900 customers.
KXAN reached out to Austin Independent School District to see if any schools in the outage area were affected. The district confirmed to KXAN that a power outage was reported at Summitt Elementary School, 12207 Brigadoon Lane, which is near MoPac and McNeil Drive.
AISD told KXAN the power was back on at the school, and there were no changes to the school day.
In a letter sent from Summitt Elementary School’s principal, it said power went out at the campus around 1 p.m., which also caused the internet and phone service to go out.
“We immediately contacted Austin Energy and Austin ISD Maintenance who shared that the neighborhood was experiencing a power outage,” the letter said.
During the outage, the letter said the campus remained “at a comfortable temperature” and students who were in portables were brought inside.
