Norway’s Nobel Committee announced on Friday that Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado had won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, dashing President Donald Trump’s reported hopes that he was in the frame for the award.
The prize goes to a person or an organization that’s has done the most “for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the formation and spreading of peace congresses”.
“She is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela, and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” the committee said in a statement.
There had been speculation in the hours leading up to the announcement that Trump was a frontrunner for the prize, which intensified overnight as Israel signed off on his Gaza peace plan.
In the backdrop, while Trump has repeatedly hinted that he was deserving of the prize in recent months, the nomination process for this year’s award closed in January as he took office in his second term as U.S. president.
