Urban Meyer sends clear message on Kalen DeBoer to Michigan Rumors

Former Ohio State Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer made his feelings clear on the prospects of Alabama head man Kalen DeBoer jumping ship for the Big Ten waters in Ann Arbor.

DeBoer is in the middle of a playoff run with the Crimson Tide, coming off a key win against the Oklahoma Sooners and heading to Southern California for the Rose Bowl against the Indiana Hoosiers.

DeBoer was on the verge of getting eliminated in the first round as Alabama fell behind 17-0 early in Norman, though they stormed back and are still in the mix for a National Championship.

If Alabama had lost to Oklahoma, DeBoer could have been put on the hot seat by fans, creating an interesting dynamic with the Michigan Wolverines lingering in the background.

By all accounts, Michigan has DeBoer at the top of the team’s coaching search after the program fired Sherrone Moore. There have been reports that DeBoer could be tempted to leave Alabama, with his name being floated in the Penn State search and now in the Michigan job.

The coach has already made a strong statement of intent to stay with Alabama. However, speculation continues as Michigan reportedly is doing all that it can to lure him up north.

Try as they may, Meyer does not believe Michigan can land DeBoer, especially amid the controversy surrounding the football team.

“No chance,” Meyer said on “The Triple Option” podcast. “He is in Alabama. You don’t leave Alabama and go anywhere. No, there is no chance. He got a good infrastructure [in Alabama]. You know, Biff Poggi came out and said Michigan is a ‘malfunctioning organization.’ That job is iffy.”

Considering the recent success in the playoffs and the fact that DeBoer is only in his second year at Tuscaloosa, it seems like a long shot that he leaves for Michigan.

Michigan is looking for a coach late in the cycle, adding to the complications, as many coaches have already signed extensions or landed with another team. They have a great challenge lying in their wake, and the DeBoer door seems closed.
