Coming up with possible solutions to extreme weather

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, or C2ES, looks to establish policies that result in solutions to help combat weather extremes. The organization was founded in 1998 at the Pew Center on Global Climate Change.

Libby Zemaitis, the Senior Manager for Resilience Programs for C2ES, explained why the Austin-San Antonio area was selected as a partner in trying to come up with ways to combat the ongoing effects of a warming climate.

She said the work involves partnering with local policymakers and leading businesses as part of the effort. She explains how the system works in the first and second years.

Colorado’s Front Range is one area where the program has been implemented. There was a good deal of community interest in this area, as extreme heat and wildfires were deemed to be the two biggest weather threats. Earlier this year, C2ES launched in the Puget Sound part of Washington state. This effort is in its first year.

The Central/South Central Texas is a good candidate for C2ES given the area’s propensity for extreme heat, the dangerous threat of wildfires, and flooding.
